HANOVER, Ind. – For the second time in three months, sophomore Maleha Motter (Danville, Ind.) has been selected by our interactive social media poll as the Female Athlete of the Month for January.
Motter, a member of the Hanover women’s basketball team, helped guide the Panthers to a 5-4 record in January, which featured a stretch of five straight victories from Jan. 6 to Jan. 20. Hanover also posted its most victories in a single month under third year head coach John Jones.
In the nine-game stretch, the sophomore tallied 14.3 rebounds and 11.7 rebounds per game while also recording nearly two steals per contest defensively. She totaled 105 total rebounds, moving her closer to breaking the program record for most rebounds in a single season, which is 289 by Molly Martin in 2007-08. .
In a home game with Franklin on Jan. 20, Motter set a then career high 18 rebounds, while also scoring 13 points. She finished with five double-doubles in the month, including each of the last four outings. The sophomore tallied double-digit scoring efforts in each of the final eight games of January, while adding six contests with 10 or more rebounds.
Motter finished with 41 percent of the total votes in the nearly four-day long poll. She accumulated over 85 of the 214 total ballots. The women’s basketball program has now earned the Female Athlete of the Month award in three consecutive months.
