INDIANAPOLIS – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its men's and women's all-sport trophy winners for the 2018-19 season on Monday, May 6.
The Panther men finished first overall, while the women were a close second place to Transylvania (Ky.).
Hanover is winning the men's all-sports trophy for the second time, with the only other occurrence coming in 1999-00. The men have placed inside the top three of the all-sports standings in each of the past seven years.
The Blue and Red's victory was aided by 10 top three finishes in 11 conference championships, including three regular season titles by football, men's basketball and men's soccer. Men's golf secured the all-sports trophy Sunday, May 5, by finishing in third place at its conference championship tournament.
With 100 possible points available to earn, the Panthers received 77.5 on the men's side. The 2018-19 total is the most ever by the Hanover men, surpassing the 2016-17 and 2017-18 totals of 58.5 points.
On the women's side, Hanover had six teams post top-three performances. Women's soccer and tennis each won their respective regular season crowns, while women's track & field placed second at the indoor meet and won the outdoor title.
With an additional three teams placing no worse than a tie for fourth, the Panthers finished with a program-high 78.17 points. Transylvania took the top spot by besting HC by 0.16 points, as the Pioneers finished with a total of 78.33. Hanover now has nine straight top-two finishes in the women's all-sports standings, a stretch that includes six titles.
The HCAC sponsors 11 sports in both the men's and women's all-sports standings, including basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track & field, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving and tennis for both genders. The conference also sponsors baseball and football for men, and softball and volleyball for women. For sports that crown both regular season and tournament champions, the final regular season standings are how the points are divvied out. Points are also allocated during meet championships in the three running events, golf and swimming.
