INDIANAPOLIS – After two victories improved him 5-0 on the season, Hanover College baseball senior, David Herrmann (Fishers, Ind.), was announced as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week.
Herrmann is receiving his first career HCAC pitcher of the week award and is the first Panther to earn weekly conference honors this spring. Classmate Garett Zorb (Medina, Ohio) was the last HC pitcher to be honored, after receiving the award on April 2, 2018.
The senior opened the week with a historic performance at Bluffton. Herrmann went seven innings, allowing five hits and no runs, while also tying the school record for strikeouts with 14. He allowed just two hits through the first four innings, as HC built up a 4-0 advantage on the scoreboard. The Panthers eventually won 5-2.
In his second performance of the week, Herrmann tossed a complete game during a 3-2 Senior Day triumph. Again, the southpaw conceded just five hits, this time giving up two runs and fanning seven batters. After HC gained a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Herrmann did not allow another hit for the remainder of the contest.
With his unblemished record, the senior has tied a career-high for single season wins. Herrmann had 21 of his 49 season strikeouts over his 16.0 innings pitched last week. He is third in the HCAC and among the national leaders in earned run average as well, 2.25.
After a 3-3 week, Hanover is 13-17 overall and 5-9 in HCAC play. Entering the final week of the regular season, the Panthers are just one loss back from the fourth and fifth spots in current standings, which would be the final two HCAC Tournament qualifying slots.
Hanover begins the final week with a doubleheader at current HCAC leader, Rose-Hulman. The Panthers and Engineers are slated for a 4 p.m. start, Wednesday, May 1.
