Panthers Fall in Season Opener at Centre

Andrew Littlefield

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Hanover College baseball team opened the 2020 season with a trip to Centre College on Friday afternoon where they dropped a competitive 5-1 decision. The Panthers move to 0-1 overall on the season while the Colonels improve to 4-0 overall.

Senior Zach Chapman (Loveland, Ohio) got the call to the mound pitching five complete innings with five strikeouts.

After surrendering a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, Chapman began to find his groove as he registered back-to-back strikeouts before retiring the side off a ground ball up the middle.

The second inning saw the Panthers go three-up, three-down before Centre plated the games first run. However, the Blue and Red would tie the contest in the next half inning as a junior Matt Vetor (Pendleton, Ind.) single set the stage for sophomore Andrew Littlefield (Louisville, Ky.). With two outs, the sophomore delivered hitting a shot to right field that scored the game-tying run.

The next few innings saw both teams go empty-handed when the Colonels capitalized on a Panther error in the bottom of the sixth that loaded the bases. Hanover remained poise as junior Justin Pope (Fishers, Ind.) was able to record a strikeout at the plate before forcing a Centre ground out that eliminated the threat.

Despite being denied in the sixth inning, Centre was able to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs on three hits to capture the 5-1 victory.

Hanover finished the night with one run on three hits and an RBI. Littlefield paced the way for the Panthers going 1-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.

The Blue and Red return to action on Saturday, February 22 as they take on Trine at 11:00 AM followed by Centre at 1:30 PM.
