Panthers Plate Two Runs in the Bottom of the Ninth Inning to Rally Past Eureka

HANOVER, Ind. –Hanover plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally past non-conference foe Eureka on Wednesday afternoon at K.T. Young Ballpark. The Blue and Red claimed the 4-3 victory.

Hanover (7-7 overall) was led by sophomore Charlie Burton (Columbus, Ind.) going 2-for-4 at the dish with a homerun.

Eureka loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with patience at the plate before Panther starter, senior Hayden McIlwain (New Castle, Ind.) was able to retire the side charting back-to-back ground outs. However, the Red Devils would score in the top of the second inning as a sacrifice bunt down the first base line plated the game's first run before a wild pitch sent another Eureka base runner to the dish, 2-0.

McIlwain settled in on the mound as he was able to force a three-up three-down third inning before leaving a runner stranded in the top of the fourth inning following a double play from senior Spencer Coop (Lexington, Ky.).

Hanover threatened the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior Mark Walkenhorst (Fort Thomas, Ky.) reached on a single before advancing to second off the bat of sophomore Charlie Burton (Columbus, Ind.). Freshman Jacob Dupps (Louisville, Ky.) drew a walk on his at bat placing runners on first base and second base before Eureka was able to get senior Brayden Imel (Barbourville, Ky.) to fly out and retire the side.

The Blue and Red cut the deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning as Burton went yard to left field pulling Hanover within 2-1. They tied the game later in the inning as Dupps drew a walk before advancing to second base on a passed ball. He scored on the next at bat as Imel recorded an RBI single tying the contest 2-2.

After surrendering a run in the top of the eighth inning, junior Eli Copner (Zionsville, Ind.) took the mound and made efficient work. The junior recorded a three-up three-down ninth inning sending the Panthers to the bottom half of the inning trailing 3-2.

The bottom half of the inning saw a Burton leadoff single before Scheafer advanced him to third base. He would later score unearned as a Eureka throwing error plated both Burton and Schaefer propelling HC to the victory.

Copner claimed his first win on the mound pitching in relief for the Panthers with three strikeouts.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, March 13 when they welcome Calvin to K.T. Young Ballpark. Game time is set for 1:30 PM.
