GREENWOOD, Ind. – With a strong team and individual defensive performance this past Saturday, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference has announced Hanover football's Matt Rier (Wellington, Fla.) as its Defensive Player of the Week.
In just three quarters of action, Rier was second on the team with five tackles, including one-half sack. The sophomore also picked up a fumbled Anderson snap in the end zone for the game's first score of the second half and his first career touchdown.
As defensive unit this past Saturday, Hanover allowed a season-low 151 total offensive yards. The Panthers also held the Ravens to just 11 total yards in the first half.
Rier and the rest of the front-seven led a strong run defense against the Ravens, who recorded minus-20 rushing yards on 20 carries.
On the season, Rier now has nine total tackles, including 1.5 for loss. The sophomore has added one pass break up as well.
This is Rier's first career HCAC Player of the Week award and Hanover's second defensive weekly honor this season.
Hanover, who won its first game of the new season against Anderson, 64-21, will look for win No. 2 with a trip to Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) Saturday, Sept. 30. The Panthers and Lions are slated for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Schueler Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.
