HANOVER, Ind. – Hanover football senior Brandon Merrick (Mount Vernon, Ind.) was tabbed an all-North Region honoree by D3football.com Tuesday morning, Dec. 4.
Merrick, a two-time all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, was named to D3football's second team for the 2018 season. The senior is just the second offensive lineman in program history to receive recognition from D3football, with Aaron Welty ('06) picking up third team honors back in 2005. Merrick is also the first Panther to garner D3football all-region accolades since linebacker Ryan Martin ('16) did so in 2015. Overall, Merrick is the 11th player in school history to be tabbed to a D3football all-region squad.
Merrick, a 2018 first team all-HCAC pick, led an offensive line that guided Hanover to 183.1 rushing yards per game, a program-high under third year head coach Matt Theobald ('96). The Panthers also averaged 429.7 total offensive yards per game, also a high under Theobald.
"Brandon scored over a 98 percent on his assignment grade and over 80 percent in execution for nine of our 11 games," stated offensive line coach Matt Brown. "A four-year starter, Brandon was the best offensive lineman on a conference championship team, in a spread offense, that rushed for over 1,800 yards."
During the 2018 season, Merrick allowed one sack and conceded just three over his final two campaigns with the Blue and Red. Hanover also earned a share of its first HCAC championship and qualified for the NCAA Division III National Playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Overall, the Panthers posted a 7-4 record, with three losses coming to regionally-ranked opponents. Hanover also produced a 7-1 conference mark, which included a 23-20 triumph over Franklin in the 88th annual Victory Bell Classic, the program's first win in the rivalry since 2004.
