HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's basketball team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 campaign, which is highlighted by a trip to Butler and a pair of non-conference tournaments.
Hanover is coming off arguably its best season in the history of the program after going 26-4 overall and making it to the NCAA National Tournament Round of Eight for the first time. The Panthers also won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2016-17 and finished No. 7 in the final D3Hoops.com National Poll.
The Blue and Red will prepare for the 2017-18 campaign with an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I opponent, Butler (Ind.), Saturday, Oct. 28. Hanover was the furthest advancing team from the state of Indiana in any of the three NCAA divisions last year, with Butler and Purdue coming in second with NCAA Division I "Sweet 16" appearances.
The Panthers and Bulldogs last met in a regular season contest at Hinkle Fieldhouse in 2012, one that Butler won 97-73. Hanover and Butler also met in an exhibition game during the 2010-11 slate, where the Bulldogs prevailed 80-41.
Kicking off the regular season, Hanover will compete in the Thomas More (Ky.) Classic against Kent State Tuscarawas (Ohio) and Otterbein (Ohio), Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18. The Panthers competed in an opening weekend tournament last season as well, which was highlighted by a 90-89 victory over then No. 11 John Carroll (Ohio).
Hanover will enter a second tournament during the 2017-18 schedule, when they appear in the Wittenberg (Ohio) Tournament. The Blue and Red will square off in a pair of neutral site contests against Marietta (Ohio) and Ohio University-Chillicothe. Marietta appeared in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 last season and finished No. 9 in the D3Hoops postseason poll.
Also of note on the non-conference slate is Wooster (Ohio) and Ohio Wesleyan. The Panthers will face both Ohio schools in in the final days of November. Wooster and OWU each spent time in the national rankings last year and each finished the campaign in the receiving votes category.
Conference play will begin with a road contest against rival Franklin, Saturday, Dec. 2. The Panthers will play four HCAC games before the New Year with three being on the road.
Hanover and Mount St. Joseph, who met in last year's HCAC Tournament Championship game, will first meet in Cincinnati on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The Blue and Red will also go to Transylvania for the first meeting with the Pioneers on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Transy took the Panthers to the wire in all three games last year, but HC prevailed on buzzer beating shots all three times, including in the HCAC Tournament semifinals.
