HANOVER, Ind. – With the start of the regular season a little over two weeks away, D3hoops.com has announced its annual Preseason Top 25 poll, with the Hanover men's basketball team coming in at No. 4. The Panthers were one of 10 teams to receive over 400 total points, accumulating 496 in the preseason poll.
Hanover is garnering its second highest ranking ever in the D3hoops national poll, as they were placed second in the nation in the final regular season poll of the 2003-04 season. The Panthers ranked seventh in the final D3hoops Top 25 poll a year ago.
The 2016-17 campaign marked the first time in six seasons the Panthers were viewed by D3hoops as one of the top 25 teams in NCAA Division III. Hanover finished 26-4 overall, while appearing in its first NCAA Tournament Elite Eight contest. The squad also won the HCAC regular season and tournament championships.
Since D3hoops began its rankings in 1999-00, the Blue and Red have now been ranked nationally 69 times, including 10 different seasons. Hanover had appeared in the rankings each of the poll's first seven years before returning in 2010-11 and 2016-17.
Also of note in the 2017-18 preseason poll is Marietta (Ohio), who the Panthers will face in a neutral site contest in late December. The Pioneers enter the season ranked 13th nationally. Three other HC opponents are also receiving votes for the national poll, including Mount St. Joseph of HCAC, as well as non-conference foes Wooster (Ohio) and Ohio Wesleyan.
This is Hanover's second preseason national honor, as the team was ranked seventh in Street & Smith's 2017-18 basketball preview magazine earlier this fall. The Blue and Red were also picked to lead the HCAC in the preseason coaches poll, which was announced last week.
The Panthers will tip off the season with a neutral site contest against Kent State-Tuscarawas (Ohio) on Friday, Nov. 17. Hanover and KSU-T will open the Thomas More Jim Connor Classic with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
