GREENWOOD, Ind. – After averaging over 20 points per game and leading the Hanover men's basketball team to a 2-0 record, junior Cam Fails (Mason, Ohio) has been named HCAC Player of the Week.
Fails is garnering his second career HCAC Player of the Week award and is the first Hanover men's basketball player to receive the weekly honor this season.
The junior averaged 20.5 points per game, while shooting 56.6 percent from the field (12-27). Hanover defeated HCAC-leading Mount St. Joseph on the road Wednesday, 64-41, and Franklin at home Saturday, 74-65. He also made six of his 10 attempts from three-point range and averaged 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest for the week.
In the road outing at MSJ, Fails netted 7-of-13 field goals to total 16 points. He also tied a season high with five rebounds and added a pair of steals versus the Lions.
Saturday, Fails made it two straight games with seven made field goals, as he set a new season high with 25 points. He poured in 4-of-5 attempts from deep against the Grizzlies, all of which came in the first half.
The junior's scoring outburst now has him less than 80 points away from becoming the 37th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Currently, he has 921 career points and is averaging 13.5 points per game over his two-plus seasons.
Fails is averaging a career high 15.6 points per contest this season, which is second on the squad and seventh in the HCAC. His .500 shooting clip this year is also the sixth highest in the conference among those making at least five field goals per game.
The Panthers, who are currently riding a season-best five-game winning streak, are 13-4 overall and 8-2 in HCAC play, just one game back from first place.
Hanover will look to avenge one if its early season losses and continue its recent stretch of strong play when they welcome Transylvania for a 7:30 p.m. tip Wednesday, Jan. 24.
