HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's basketball team pounced Boyce early in their home opener Tuesday evening from Collier Arena as the Blue and Red defeated the Bulldogs, 115-53.
The Panthers (2-0 overall) finished the contest with a game-high 51 rebounds including 35 defensive boards. The Blue and Red also tacked on 32 points off turnovers after forcing 17 Bulldog miscues. Leading the charge for HC was junior Mark Albers (Pendleton, Ind.) with 20 points.
The Blue and Red shot past Boyce early as Albers connected for back-to-back three pointers to get Collier Arena rocking in the first half, 6-0. The excitement continued for the Panthers as junior Isaac Hibbard (New Albany, Ind.) did some damage with the deep ball sinking back-to-back blows to put HC on top 18-5 with 16 minutes remaining.
The hot shooting continued late into the half for Hanover as freshman Ty Houston (Union, Ky.) and senior Blake Robertson (Greenfield, Ind.) made their way into the scores column with back-to-back three's that pushed the lead to 34-14 with just under 10 to play. Firing on all cylinders, the Blue and Red continued to extend their lead with a three-pointer by sophomore Carlos Garcia (Mason, Ohio) and a steal from Hibbard that set the stage for a 54-23 halftime advantage.
Hanover finished the half shooting 48.6 percent from the field, led by double digit performances from Albers and Hibbard.
Boyce looked to get something going in the second half as they scored four straight points to pull within 58-29 before Albers halted the surge with a run of his own to extend the advantage, 62-29. Sophomore Christian Stewart (Clarksville, Ind.) dealt clutch in the paint with a pair of layups to keep the Panther momentum at the 10:37 mark, 81-33.
HC ran away with it in the second half as the combination of freshman Alex Westerbeck (Union, Ky.) and sophomore Noah Williams (Jeffersonville, Ind.) deemed unstoppable. Westerbeck and Williams provided back-to-back deep threats with 7:12 to play for the 94-37 advantage. With the game well in hand, junior Jackson McHugh (Indianapolis, Ind.) made his way into the stats column with another HC three-pointer before freshman Jack Wininger (Elnora, Ind.) worked his magic down low en route to the 115-53 victory.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 as they take part in the Webster (Mo.) Classic. The Blue and Red tip-off with Westminster on Friday at 7 PM.
