SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Hanover College Panthers traveled to no. 3-ranked Wittenberg on Wednesday afternoon where the Blue and Red fell in non-conference action, 69-52.
Hanover (6-2 overall) saw three players finish in double figures paced by junior Connor Washburn (Fishers, Ind.) with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Carlos Garcia (Masion, Ohio) added 11 points and junior Isaac Hibbard (New Albany, Ind.) netted 10 points.
The Blue and Red saw themselves trialing early in the first half before Washburn registered an offensive rebound and layup to knot the contest at the 16:53 mark. The Tigers responded using an 8-0 run over a three minute span to extend the advantage, 10-2.
Garcia would enter the contest and deem clutch with a three-pointer that pulled them within four points, but Wittenberg remained poise hitting a jumper at the midway point in the stanza for the 20-14 lead. The offense erupted once more late in the half for the Tigers as a 6-0 run gave them the 11 point advantage. Hibbard closed out the period as he drew a shooting foul from behind the three-point arc to cut the deficit to 31-22 at the intermission.
The second half opened quick as Wittenberg surged ahead with a 10-0 run over a six minute span to blow the game wide open, 43-24. Hanover looked to get something going as a quick run paced by Washburn cut the deficit, but the Tigers responded using an old fashion three-point play with 10 minutes remaining for the upper hand, 53-33. Wittenberg never looked back netting 17 points off turnovers, while shooting 41.7 percent from the floor for the non-conference victory.
The Panthers return to action on Monday, December 30 when they take on Dubuque as part of the Wheaton (Ill.) Tournament. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
