WHEATON, Ill. - Senior Kevin Williams (Edinburgh, Ind.) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player as the Blue and Red defeated host Wheaton College for the Tournament Championship Tuesday evening, 76-65.
Junior Isaac Hibbard (New Albany, Ind.) was also named a member of the All-Tournament Team.
As a team, Hanover (8-2 overall) shot a game-high 58.8 percent from the floor while pulling in 31 rebounds led by Hibbard with a double-double. The point guard netted 14 points with 10 rebounds, while Williams added a game best 19 points.
Junior Mark Albers (Pendleton, Ind.) started the excitment early for the Panthers as he hit a three-pointer at the 15:18 mark to give Hanover the 10-5 advantage. But Wheaton hung around tying the contest moments later with a pair of back-to-back scores before Albers deemed clutch with a quick layup in the lane. They continued to push as Kevin Williams and Albers extended the difference to 27-21 with just over eight minutes to play. The Blue and Red closed out the half with a 12-0 run to secure the 39-23 advantage.
In the second half, Wheaton attempted a strong comeback before senior Blake Robertson (Greenfield, Ind.) connected on a deep ball pushing the difference back to ten points when freshman Gavin Hess (Indianapolis, Ind.) hit a jumper at the 11:12 mark for the 56-44 lead. The series of runs continued as a 9-0 surge paced by Kevin Williams blew the game wide open. Senior Logan Ratts (Martinsville, Ind.) secured the victory with a three-pointer in the final minutes en route to the Tournament Championship.
Hanover returns to action on Saturday, January 4 as they take on Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman. Tip-off is set for 4 PM.
