Men's golf opens spring slate at MSJ Invitational this weekend

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's golf team is set to begin its 2019 spring schedule with the two-day Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) Spring Invitational.

SETTING THE SCENE: Hanover's spring slate opens with 36 holes this Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace in Centerville, Ohio. The first round on Saturday will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Sunday's final round commences with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

THE COMPETITION: Thirteen teams will compete this weekend, including six from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (Anderson, Bluffton, Earlham, Hanover, MSJ and Rose-Hulman). Three of the top 90 teams in the official Golfstat national rankings -- Trine (53), Otterbein (74), Wooster (89) -- are in the field as well. Rounding out the field is John Carroll, Ohio Northern, North Central and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

THE COURSE: The Golf Club at Yankee Trace is a Gene Bates design and features 27 championship holes. This weekend will see the teams play on the "Heritage" and "Legend" sides, which combine for 7,153 yards from the back tees. The same tee box set has a rating and slope of 74.1 and 136. The Dayton Daily News has named its the top course in the Dayton-area for 14 years and Golf Digest has tabbed it as a top 50 municipal course in the country.

MSJ FALL TOURNAMENT: The Panthers competed in a fall tournament hosted by MSJ this season, placing in a tie for second out of eight teams. School records fell during the event at Indian Ridge Golf Club, as a round one team score of 291 and a tournament team total of 592 now sit atop the program's all-time leaderboard. Austin Zapp tied his own school record with an opening-round 68 en route to a tie for second place in the individual standings. Charlie Bullerdick added a top 10 finish with his career-best 36-hole total of 147 (70-77).

MSJ SPRING TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Last season's MSJ spring tournament was cancelled, making 2017 the last time Hanover has competed in a Lions-hosted event in the spring. The 2017 tournament was hosted at Aston Oaks Golf Club, where the Blue and Red tied for third in the 14-team field. Austin Zapp and John Summerlin were the only two golfers on the current roster who competed, placing T20 and T42, respectively, as individuals.

UP NEXT: Hanover will return to action for the second time in as many weeks, as the team heads to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Rose-Hulman Spring Invitational. The 36-hole tournament is slated to take place at Hulman Links Golf Course.
