Men's golf continues spring slate with Rose-Hulman Invite this weekend

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's golf team returns to action for the second time this spring season with the Rose-Hulman Invitational.

SETTING THE SCENE: The Panthers, along with 12 other teams are currently scheduled to compete Sunday, March 31. Tournament play will also take place at Idle Creek Golf Course, in Terre Haute, Ind., instead of the original site, Hulman Links.

COMPETITION: This weekend's tournament will feature eight schools from NCAA Division III, two from the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II, and one from NCAA Division II, NAIA and USCAA. DePauw headlines the group of Division III institutions, sitting at No. 69 in the current GolfStat national rankings. Lindenwood (Mo.) is No. 40 in the NCAA Division II rankings, while Vincennes (Ind.) and Lincoln Trail (Ill.) are both among the top 30 nationally in the junior college ranks. The host Engineers, along with Anderson and Earlham, join Hanover as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference members competing this weekend.

THE COURSE: Idle Creek Golf Course, designed by Rick Jenkins and Jack Keidel, has a par 71 layout, and will play just over 6,300 yards this weekend. As Terre Haute's only "golf community" course, Idle Creek is surrounded by a 300-lot subdivision.

LAST TIME OUT: Hanover's 2019 spring opener saw the team place in a tie for fifth with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.), who is also in action at Rose-Hulman this weekend. The Panthers posted team rounds of 312 and 314 for a total of 626. Austin Zapp led the way, tying for sixth place with a score of 151 (77-74). Caleb Lung (154) and Luke Van Leeuwen (163) each recorded their best performances in their brief collegiate careers, tying for 11th and 38th respectively.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Rose-Hulman Spring Invite is usually played at Hulman Links Golf Course, a site that has seen the Panthers place fourth each of the last two years. Among the returners and those competing this weekend, Zapp and Charlie Bullerdick had notable performances in 2018. Zapp tied for 16th after back-to-back rounds of 75 (150). Bullerdick fired a pair of sub-80 rounds as well, placing in a tie for 38th at 157 (78-79).

UP NEXT: Hanover will host its annual spring invitational next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7. The Panthers have a new tournament name and host site this season, as the "Battle at Belterra" will be played in Florence, Ind. at the Belterra Casino Golf Club.
