Panthers in third after opening weekend of HCAC Championship

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Hanover College men's golf team concluded the opening weekend of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers sit in third place at the midway point of the league tournament with a team score of 622. Hanover tied for the second lowest round Sunday at 316.

A pair of Panthers are tied for eighth overall with a 36-hole total of 152. Freshman Luke Van Leeuwen (Kettering, Ohio) and junior Austin Zapp (Union, Ky.) carded rounds of 77 and 79, respectively, on Sunday. Van Leeuwen bogeyed his first five holes in the second round before posting a par on the final 13 holes. As a result, the freshman is second in the tournament field with 23 pars.

Zapp is second in the field in par four scoring average, 4.05. The junior had two birdies on the front nine Sunday, giving him a team-high six for the tournament.

Sophomore Charlie Bullerdick (New Market, Ind.) had the second lowest round for HC Sunday with a 78. Bullerdick is tied for 11th overall at 154 and is one of just seven golfers in red figures in par five scoring, minus-one. The junior finished strong Sunday with a back-nine 37.

Logging a front-nine 37 in the second round was junior Addy Allyn (Culver, Ind.). Allyn is in 22nd place after consecutive rounds of 82 this weekend. Freshman Caleb Lung (Nappanee, Ind.) is tied for 32nd with a score of 171 (84-87).

The scoring average Sunday went up three strokes from the opening round to 85.35. The field average through 36 holes is 83.91. With 10 rounds accounted for, the Blue and Red have eight rounds under the scoring average.

Twelve-time defending champion and the host for the first weekend, Transylvania, leads after recording back-to-back rounds of 295 for a total of 590. Earlham is second with a score of 618 (302-316).

Hanover, along with the rest of the tournament field will now travel to Anderson, Ind. next Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. The final two rounds of the HCAC Championship are scheduled to take place at Anderson Country Club.
