Men's golf heads to Anderson C.C. for final two rounds of HCAC Championship

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College men's golf team is set to conclude the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with rounds three and four this weekend.

SETTING THE SCENE: The Panthers and the rest of the HCAC institutions make the trip to Anderson Country Club, in Anderson, Ind., this Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. Hanover will tee off in the final five groupings, with a 1:30 p.m. start. Transylvania and Earlham will also go off with the Blue and Red in the third round and fourth round tee times are still to be determined.


A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS: Transylvania, who hosted the opening two rounds, is in first place after back-to-back rounds of 295 to total 590 strokes. Earlham, 618 (302-316), and Hanover, 622 (306-316), round out the top three teams in the standings. The rest of the field enters the weekend as follows: Franklin (635), Mt. St. Joseph (640), Defiance (642), Rose-Hulman (663), Bluffton (708), Anderson (725) and Manchester (779).

ALL-HCAC AWARDS LOOMING: A trio of golfers are positioned nicely to hunt for all-conference recognition heading into the final weekend of tournament play. Currently, junior Austin Zapp (Union, Ky.) and freshman Luke Van Leeuwen (Kettering, Ohio) are tied for eighth, which is the final slot for all-conference awards. Both golfers shot 152 during the first two rounds, with Zapp going 73-79 and Van Leeuwen carding rounds of 75 and 77. Van Leeuwen is also just two shots back of Defiance's Federico Gutierrez in the race for the Freshman of the Year award. Sophomore Charlie Bullerdick (New Market, Ind.) is tied for 11th after posting consecutive sub-80 rounds for a total of 154 (76-78).

THE COURSE & PANTHER HISTORY: Anderson Country Club is set to host rounds of the HCAC Championship for the first time since 2011. The par 72 course plays 6,605 yards from its back tees. Hanover enjoyed its better two rounds at Anderson back in 2011, 314 and 315, en route to a fourth place finish in the overall standings. The last time the Panthers competed at Anderson C.C. was in the fall of 2015, placing third out of six teams with a score of 613 (308-305). None of the current HC golfers were members of the program the last time the team made the trip north.
