HANOVER, Ind. – Junior Joseph DeLeo (Waterford, Mich.) recorded three points, but the Hanover men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener at home Saturday afternoon to Centre (Ky.), 9-3.
DeLeo and the Panther (0-1) offense did all of their damage in the opening half, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes of play. The junior found sophomore Patrick Boylston (Boca Raton, Fla.) for the first goal of the game a little over a minute in.
Hanover and Centre (3-1) alternated the first four goals of the game, as a score from junior Gage Hafl (Hamilton, Ohio) gave the Panthers what would be their final lead, 2-1, with 8:03 left in the first quarter. Back-to-back scores by the Colonels earned them their first advantage on the scoreboard, but DeLeo's goal at the 5:07 mark of the second quarter tied it at three-all.
Centre tallied a late first half goal to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission. The Colonels added five second half goals to secure the 9-3 victory.
Boylston and senior Bret Schell (Dayton, Ohio) tied for the team high in shots with four apiece. Hafl, DeLeo and freshman Eric Hopkins (Evansville, Ind.) added multiple shots as well. Centre would enjoy an advantage in total shots, while also holding a 17-8 edge on goal.
Boylston paced the Panthers with five groundballs with Schell and junior Evan Bartlett (Oxford, Ohio) adding three apiece. Defensively, Schell and freshman Max Kleiman (Hudson, Ohio) each recorded two caused turnovers. Sophomore Noah Dubrava (Centerville, Ohio) played the entire 60 minutes in net for HC, recording eight saves.
Hanover will look to bounce back from the season-opening loss with a 1 p.m. contest at Greensboro (N.C.) Monday, Feb. 26.
