HANOVER, Ind. – On an unpleasant and rainy evening, the Hanover men's soccer team fell 2-0 to DePauw in the season-opener for both teams.
The match, which was played on the Alumni Stadium turf instead of the team's natural grass field, was played on a rain soaked surface throughout the entirety.
Scoreless through the first 25 minutes of action, DePauw's Andrew Gold took a pass from Jack Cornelo and scored at the 25:13 mark to put the Tigers ahead 1-0.
The Panthers had a couple shots on goal in the first half, but both were stopped and the score remained 1-0 into the break.
Just under 16 minutes into the second half, DePauw added its second goal when Jack Brady put back a deflected shot for the final 2-0 tally. Justin Mitchell recorded the assist, his first of the fall.
The Tigers, which entered the season ranked No. 26, out-shot Hanover 13-6 and had a slight 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Chris Brashear (Hebron, Ky.) and freshman Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) played a half each in goal for the Panthers. Bedel made four saves in his first collegiate outing.
The Panthers will next travel to play their first road contest of the season against Thomas More. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky.
