Men’s soccer preps for a pair of HCAC contests this week

HANOVER, Ind. – With its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match out of the way, the Hanover men's soccer team will play at Franklin Wednesday, Oct. 4, and then return home to host Anderson Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Panthers (6-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 HCAC) split a pair of matches last week as they fell 2-1 at Wilmington (Ohio) Tuesday, and then opened the HCAC season with a 1-0 win in overtime at Manchester.

With the win, Hanover has now won four of its last five conference-opening contests, including the last three by a combined score of 8-1. The lone defeat in that time was a 1-0 loss to Bluffton (Ohio) in 2014.

Junior Tanner Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored his team-leading sixth goal in the team's loss to Wilmington. The score was also his sixth in the last six matches to that point to give him a team-best 13 points.

Senior Michael Dumaine (California, Ky.) played the hero in Saturday's overtime win over the Spartans. With only 1:36 left in the first extra period, Dumaine score his second goal of the season to give the Panthers the 1-0 road victory. Freshman Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) had a strong performance in goal with four saves for his third solo shutout of the year.

Through nine contests, Korfhagen ranks in the top five players in the HCAC in points and goals while Bedel also ranks among the league leaders in goals against average and save percentage.

Hanover will first play at Franklin this week. The Grizzlies will enter the contest with a 1-8-0 overall mark and an 0-1-0 record in the HCAC. Franklin played once last week and fell 2-0 at Defiance in its conference opener.

After nine games, the Grizzlies' offense is averaging 1.89 goals, while the defense has allowed 2.75 per match. Junior Luke Oliver leads the team with 11 points on three goals and five assists. Sophomore Mason May has a team-high four goals.

In goal, senior Garrett Belden has allowed 2.71 goals against in seven starts with 43 saves and a .705 save percentage.

Anderson is 6-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play after splitting a pair of matches last week. The Ravens fell 8-0 to Ohio Northern in a non-conference game and then beat Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) 2-1 Saturday.

Junior Jacob Pokorski enters the week with a team-best 12 points on four goals and four assists. Another junior, Cory Baker, has three goals and three assists for nine points.

Five different players have seen action in goal for Anderson with Senior Brandon Weer having started all 11 matches. He currently has a 1.96 goals against average to go along with 66 saves and a .750 save percentage.

The Ravens will host Manchester Wednesday at 3:00 pm before traveling to Hanover for Saturday's contest.

Since 2010, Hanover is 4-2-1 against Anderson and 3-2-2 against Franklin. The Panthers have won the last two meetings against the Ravens, and have not allowed them to score in the last four years. Hanover is also had recent success against the Grizzlies with a 3-0-1 mark in the last four match-ups.

Wednesday's start time against Franklin is set for 7:30 p.m., and Saturday's match against Anderson will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be the first home match for Hanover since September 10.
