HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's soccer team opens the 2018 season later this month and as the opening match nears, we will preview each position group, starting with the midfielders.
The Panthers are coming off their third consecutive double-digit win season, posting a 12-4-2 overall record, including a 7-1-1 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Hanover's record over the past three seasons, 40-15-5, is good enough for a .708 winning percentage.
The Blue and Red received some key minutes and contributions from a rather young midfield core in 2017 and the group will look to continue to improve this fall. Returning this season as starters from last year are sophomores Nicholas Ash (Louisville, Ky.) and Chris Pitre (Belle Chasse, La.). Ash and Pitre both appeared in all 18 games last season and combined for 34 starts.
Offensively, another pair of sophomores, Ian Waldrop (Louisville, Ky.) and Renato Yostsui (Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, Brazil), combined for 13 total points, including two goals apiece. Yostsui is also the leading assist returner for HC, dishing out three helpers in 2017.
A group of upperclassmen will also look to contribute in the midfield, highlighted by Brady Gesenhues (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and Evan Stacy (Louisville, Ky.). The duo combined for three goals last season and both players appeared in 15 games.
Look for a talented group of first-year athletes to contribute right away as well.
The Panthers will open regular season play Friday, Aug. 31, when they travel to face in-state rival DePauw. Next week we will continue our preseason position preview by taking a look at the returning forwards.
