HANOVER, Ind. – With the regular season just over one week away, we conclude our season preview series of the men's soccer program with the goalkeepers and defenders.
The Panthers are coming off their third consecutive double-digit win season, posting a 12-4-2 overall record in 2017, including a 7-1-1 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Hanover's record over the past three seasons, 40-15-5, is good enough for a .708 winning percentage. Recently, HC has also been picked to finish second in the conference, as predicted by the league's head coaches.
With the loss of three 2017 all-conference selections, the backline will look to rely on younger players with experience to lead the way this fall. Highlighting the defender position is sophomore Myles Joseph (Lafayette, Ind.). Joseph started all 18 matches last season and his defensive efforts led him to a second team all-HCAC selection.
Other notables returning in the back row are sophomores Chuck Moore (Louisville, Ky.) and Ethan Miller (Breaux Bridge, La.). Moore posted 13 caps in his freshman campaign, logging two goals and one assist, including the game-winning score in a 1-0 decision against Wittenberg (Ohio). Miller appeared in 17 matches, with seven starts, as he logged the game-winning assist in a 1-0 triumph at conference-foe Earlham.
In goal, sophomore Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) is coming off a stellar first season with the Blue and Red. Bedel appeared in all 18 matches, including 17 starts, as he was a part of all eight of the team's clean sheets. With six solo shutouts, Bedel's goal against average of 0.76 was good enough for third in the HCAC and inside the top 50 nationally.
Junior Chris Brashear (Hebron, Ky.) also returns this fall. In nearly 500 minutes of action in his career, Brashear has a 0.91 goal against average and a 3-1-0 record.
As a defensive unit in 2017, Hanover had the third best goal against average in the conference, 0.81. The scoring defense mark also ranked 44th in NCAA Division III.
Hanover is slated to open regular season play Friday, Aug. 31. The Panthers will start the new campaign on the road as they take on in-state rival DePauw.
