HANOVER, Ind. – Freshman Leonardo Bottura (Taubate, Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored twice as the Hanover men's soccer team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 home victory over Manchester Saturday afternoon.
Bottura got the Panthers (4-5-0, 1-0-0 HCAC) on the board in the 38th minute, striking a shot past the Manchester goalkeeper from 20 yards out on the left flank. Sophomore Renato Yostsui (Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, Brazil) picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.
The Panther goal came as part of a 9-1 shot advantage in the first half. The Blue and Red nearly had a 2-0 advantage when sophomore Brad Simpson (Allen, Texas) hit the crossbar in the 28th minute. Only two of HC's nine shots over the opening 45 minutes came on goal. Manchester's (2-7-1, 0-1-0 HCAC) lone try came early but was block by the Panther defense.
Hanover continued to be aggressive on offense in the second half, holding a 13-3 edge in shots over the final 45. Sophomore Josh Hughes (Lafayette, La.) was rewarded for his efforts with his first goal as a Panther in the 52nd minute. Hughes ripped a shot from just inside the right side of the 18-yard box after receiving a pass from senior Tanner Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Less than 10 minutes later, beautiful passing off a set piece led to Bottura's second goal of the match. Freshman Evan Redmon (Lousiville, Ky.) took a free kick from the left side and played it down to the corner to classmate Carlos Schryver (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Schryver then dropped a cross in the box that went off Korfhagen's foot before connecting with Bottura's foot at 60:59. Korfhagen's two assists improve his conference-high point total to 18.
Sophomore Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) made his lone save in the 88th minute, giving him his second shutout of the season and eighth clean sheet of his career. Bedel has also been a part of two team shutouts in his collegiate career.
Overall, Hanover held a 22-4 advantage in total shots, including a 10-1 edge on goal. Freshman Fellipe Busato (Sao Paulo, Brazil) paced the Panthers with four shots. Bottura and Hughes each added three shots, while Korfhagen, Redmon and Yostsui each had multiple tries as well.
With two straight shutouts to their name, the Blue and Red will continue HCAC play by hosting Franklin at 3:30 p.m., next Wednesday, Oct. 3.
