Men's swimming concludes HCAC Championships in third place

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Hanover men's swimming team concluded competition at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, finishing third overall.

Highlighting the performance on Day Three was the 400 freestyle relay. The group of junior Alex Maldeney (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshmen Louis Holbrook (Greenfield, Ind.), Will Morgan (Lapel, Ind.) and James Moll (Tipton, Ind.) placed second overall with a time of 3:14.90. The Panthers had the final three legs all swim a sub-50 second 100 free.

Maldeney set a personal record in the final race of the night, 47.17, which topped his previous best mark that came in the 100 free prelims, 47.77 seconds. The junior went on to place ninth in the consolation finals race, touching at 48.13 seconds.

Freshman Davis Guthier (Fort Thomas, Ky.) competed in the 1650 freestyle, an event that saw him post an eighth-place performance. Guthier swam the distance race in 17:35.03 for a huge personal record.

Holbrook and Moll both set personal-bests in the prelims of the 200 fly (2:07.27) and 200 backstroke (2:05.47), respectively. After setting a PR by five seconds in the morning swim, Holbrook improved by more than three seconds in the night session to place ninth with a time of 2:03.49. Moll was also ninth with a finals' time of 2:06.38.

In the Panthers' first appearance at the HCAC-hosted meet, the squad produced 204 points over three days to finish in the top half of the league standings. Franklin took first place with 723.5 points, outlasting Rose-Hulman (696) for the top spot. The bottom half of the final standings saw Anderson (173.5), Transylvania (169) and Manchester (141) place fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
