HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's tennis team will open the 2017-18 season on the road Sunday, Oct. 1, as they travel to face IU-Southeast.
The Panthers were originally scheduled to begin their season back on Sept. 17, at home, against Bellarmine, but that match was postponed to Sunday, Oct. 15.
Hanover is coming off a 12-11 overall season in 2016-17, which included a 6-2 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Blue and Red also made their second straight HCAC Tournament semifinal appearance.
Three 2016-17 all-conference selections are back to lead the way for Hanover this season, including current sophomore Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.). Carrico posted a 16-6 singles record last season, including a 7-1 mark in HCAC play, en route to being named the conference's freshman of the year.
Juniors Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.) and Alec Bates (New Albany, Ind.) are also back this fall. Both Barrett and Bates have earned all-HCAC accolades each of their first two seasons with the Blue and Red.
The duo paired for most of the doubles matches throughout 2016-17, posting a 12-6 overall record. Barrett also added a team high 17 wins in singles play, including a 7-1 record during the conference campaign.
The Panthers and Grenaiders met last season in Hanover, with IUS taking the victory, 8-1. Carrico earned the lone point for HC, winning the top singles match by a count of 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2).
IU-Southeast is currently 1-0 on the season, defeating HCAC institution, Franklin, 8-1. The Grenaiders will host Judson (Ill.) Saturday before welcoming the Panthers at 11 a.m. Sunday.
