ORLANDO, Fla. – The Hanover men's tennis team split a pair of 5-4 matches against Adrian (Mich.) and Concordia-Moorhead (Wis.) Monday at the USTA Tennis Center.
The Panthers (2-7) opened the day by winning two-of-three doubles matches, which ultimately led to a 5-4 victory over Adrian. Unfortunately for HC, they dropped two doubles contests against CCM and split the six singles matches in a 5-4 defeat.
The tandem of juniors Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.) and Alec Bates (New Albany, Ind.) posted an unblemished 2-0 mark Monday in the No. 3 slot. The duo earned an 8-3 win over Adrian and 8-4 decision against CCM. Barrett went on to earn a 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2 victories in the No. 4 singles spot as well.
Also posting two singles wins for HC was senior Dakota Smith (Greenfield, Ind.). Smith, winner of five of his last singles matches, conceded just three games to his Adrian opponent before having to go the distance in a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision versus CCM.
The senior went 1-1 with sophomore Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) in doubles action as well, earning a team point in an 8-4 win over Adrian. Carrico, HC's top singles competitor, also earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
Bates and sophomore Mitchell Minniear (Muncie, Ind.) also went three sets in singles competition against the Cobbers, with Minniear coming out on top in the fifth slot, 6-0, 1-6, 10-6.
Hanover will look to finish its annual Winter Break Florida trip at .500 for the second consecutive year when the squad competes against Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27.
