HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College men's tennis team concluded the regular season with its seventh straight victory, defeating Manchester at home Saturday, 9-0.
The Panthers (9-6, 6-1 HCAC) opened the day with the shutout over the Spartans (5-9, 2-6 HCAC) and were scheduled to take on Rose-Hulman in the afternoon. The second match had started doubles play but was cancelled due to precipitation.
A quintet of Panthers logged singles and doubles victories Saturday. Juniors Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) and Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, before going on to earn straight victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Both juniors lost just three total singles games.
Sophomore Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and freshman Connor Garrison (Louisville, Ky.) took the top doubles slot in a tiebreaker, 8-7. Trombley went on to win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 7-5, while Garrison had a 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the final spot.
Giving HC a clean sweep in doubles play were freshmen Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) and Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.), who won at No. 3, 8-1. Asplund also earned a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles. Picking up the sixth singles victory was sophomore Jed Fajt (Greencastle, Ind.), who won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
All three doubles teams now have at least a four-match winning streak, led by Gallart and Asplund at six appearances. Carrico also sports a nine-match winning streak in singles competition.
Hanover finishes the regular season third in the HCAC standings, marking the fourth consecutive year with a top three finish. With the afternoon cancellation, Rose-Hulman stays unbeaten in HCAC play to win the regular season title.
The Panthers will now enter postseason play with the HCAC Tournament next weekend, in Indianapolis, at the West Indy Racquet Club. The No. 3 seed Hanover will face the No. 6 seed Anderson at 4 p.m., Friday, May 3.
