HANOVER, Ind. - The Hanover men's tennis team will open their spring calendar strong as they travel to face Thomas More (Ky.), with action set for 7 p.m., Saturday, January 25.
The Panthers are essentially opening up their season, as they had just one match in the fall, a 5-4 victory over Midway (Ky.). In the win, the men were bolstered by the singles matches, where they were able to garner four triumphs in six matches. Among these was the no.2 singles match, where senior Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Also coming through with straight set victories were the no.5 and no.6 singles competitors, juniors Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Jed Fajt (Greencastle, Ind.), who swept with scores of 6-4, 6-3, and 7-6, 6-4, respectively.
During the 2018-19 season, Hanover finished with a 10-7 overall record that included a 6-1 mark in the HCAC, with their lone regular season loss coming at the hands of the Quakers, who would top them in the postseason as well.
The Blue and Red will look to have another successful Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season slate. In the past four years, the Panthers have captured six conference victories on three occasions. However, in each HCAC Conference Tournament over that span, they were defeated in the semifinals, most recently by the Earlham Quakers in the 2019 campaign.
Their opponent this Saturday, Thomas More, comes into the contest with a 1-0 slate on the year. Their victory came in September over Miami-Middletown (Ohio) where they swept by a 7-0 margin. In 2018-19, the Saints finished 8-10, with victories over Franklin and Transylvania (Ky.) by scores of 5-4 and 6-3, respectively.
