HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's tennis team will return to the courts after opening the spring season with a 4-3 victory over Thomas More. The Panthers head south to take on USA South West Division Champs Piedmont Friday, February 14 before taking on nationally ranked Sewanee on Saturday, February 15. The Sewanee Tigers will play host to the two day event.
THE HCAC POLL: The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference recently released its preseason poll for the 2020 season, as the Blue and Red were pegged runner-up with 65 points. Rose-Hulman claimed the top spot with 78 points and eight first place votes, while Earlham rounded out the top three with 63 points.
GARRISON WINS: In the Panthers victory over Thomas More on January 25, sophomore Connor Garrison (Louisville, Ky.) deemed clutch as he secured the final point needed to defeat the Saints 4-3. Garrison proved victorious at No. 6 singles where he defeated Josh Huster by a score of 7-5, 6-3. Leading up to the match, teammates junior Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) secured the team's first point of the afternoon as he won No. 5 singles before senior Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) claimed a victory at No. 2 singles taking down his opponent 6-4, 6-3. The match tying point came at No. 3 singles where sophomore Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) knotted the contest with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph.
SCOUTING PIEDMONT: The Lions were picked to repeat as USA South West Division champions earning three of the seven first place votes. Last season, Piedmont finished with a 14-8 overall record and an 11-1 conference mark. Returning to the lineup for the Lions are top singles players Chase Morris and Houston Medlock.
SCOUTING SEWANEE: The Tigers enter the 2020 season as the Southern Athletic Association favorite after winning their seventh regular season and conference tournament crown. The program made its 17th NCAA Tournament Appearance after posting a 21-7 overall record. Along with the teams national ranking, two players, Andres Carro and Jordan Brewer enter the 2020 campaign ranked among the top 40 in singles play according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
