CHICAGO, Ill. - The men's tennis team made the trip north to Chicago, Ill. Sunday afternoon sweeping the competition en route to two non-conference wins. The Panthers opened the afternoon defeating Millikin 5-4 before toppling Praire State 4-3.
In the teams 5-4 victory over Millikan, the Blue and Red fell in doubles action before bouncing back in singles action led by senior Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) who secured the team victory as part of no. 4 singles. Helmers defeated Logan Bennett in a competitive 7-5, 6-4 decision.
In no. 2 singles, senior Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) picked up a win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph while teammate sophomore Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) won no. 3 singles over Holden Owens by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
The second match of the afternoon saw the Panthers defeat Praire State behind a game clinching match by Fajt. Fajt defeated Jibril Dean 6-1, 6-0 at no. 6 singles en route to the team victory.
Hanover opened the match with the early 1-0 advantage after claiming no. 2 and no. 3 doubles. Carrico and Helmers teamed up to take no. 2 doubles by a score of 6-1, before the duo of Asplund and sophomore Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) joined forces to clinch no. 3 singles 6-4 and the overall doubles point.
Carrico continued his perfect afternoon at no. 2 singles where he defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2.
Trombley set the stage for Fajt as he defeated Miguel Ferreira in no. 5 singles 6-4, 6-4, tying the match at 3-3 and the rest is history as the junior went on to claim the win.
The Blue and Red return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they travel to Centre. Doubles action is slated for noon.
