HANOVER, Ind. – After opening the season last week, members of the Hanover men's track and field team will compete at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational Friday, Jan. 26 and the Tom Hathaway Classic Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27.
THE COMPETITION: Bellarmine (Ky.), Brescia (Ky.), Franklin (Ind.), Kentucky Wesleyan, Millikin (Ill.), Thomas More (Ky.), Transylvania (Ky.), and Wabash (Ind.)
LAST MEET: The Panthers finished fourth out of seven schools with a team score of 52. Three runners scored in 400m led by freshman Reece Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.). Hunter placed second in the event with a time of 52.65 and was followed by sophomore Samuel Pyle (Goshen, Ky.) in third with a time of 52.81 and junior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.) in sixth at 53.33 seconds.
That trio was joined by senior Andrew Strong (Poland, Ind.) in both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays which finished third (1:34.09) and second (3:36.49), respectively.
Senior Jacob Sofronko (Ridgeville, Ind.) and freshman Clayton Noblitt (New Goshen, Ind.) placed posted top five finishes. Sofronko posted a toss of 14.69m in the weight throw, while Noblitt ran the 60m in 7.38 seconds.
LAST YEAR: The men's team did not compete at the RHIT Engineer Invitational last year, but did send members of the team to the Tom Hathaway Classic. Junior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) and senior Joe Rector (Aurora, Ind.) placed second and third in the 5,000m. Hedrick ran a time of 15:37.17 followed closely by Rector in 15:38.76. Jacob Sofronko also competed and was sixth in the weight throw with with a distance of 14.12m
ATHLETES TO WATCH: Heading to Terre Haute, Ind. for Friday's meet will be Jacob Sofronko and sophomores Kyler Perez (Garrett, Ind.) and Ethan Monnin (Minster, Ohio). Sofronko and Perez will compete in the weight throw, and Monnin is scheduled to participate in the pole vault. Those that will be traveling to Indianapolis for the Tom Hathaway Classic include junior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.), Reece Hunter, Samuel Pyle, Darrell Payne and Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.). Sheryak and Hunter will do the heptathlon. Pyle and Payne will run the 200m and Veach the 800m.
SPEAKING OF THE HEPTATHLON: At least one new school record will be set this weekend as Joe Sheryak and Reece Hunter become the first indoor track and field athletes in school history to compete in the heptathlon. The event will begin Friday afternoon at the Tom Hathaway Classic and wrap up Saturday at the University of Indianapolis. Sheryak set the outdoor record in the decathlon last year with a score of 5,620.
UP NEXT: Following this weekend, the Panthers will next travel to Anderson, Ind. to take part in the Anderson Invitational Saturday, Feb. 3. The meet is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Kardatzke Wellness Center.
