Two school records set at Tom Hathaway Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Junior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) and sophomore Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) each set a school record to highlight a big day by the Hanover men's track and field team at the Tom Hathaway Classic Saturday afternoon. 

Veach broke the school mark in the 800m as he finished the race in 1:59.53 to take the top spot from Mike Sullivan, who ran a time of 2:00.56 in 2005. Entering today's meet, Veach's previous best was a 2:02.05, which was fourth on the school's performance list. His time today was good for second overall.

Sheryak completed the heptathlon today in second place and finished with 4,238 points to set a school record. The junior set personal bests in the pole vault and 60m hurdles, while placing among the top three in all three day-two events. With his 4,238 points, he now ranks 10th in the country in the event among NCAA Division III athletes. 

Sheryak's time of 9.21 in the 60m hurdles was good for third and also moves him into fourth all-time on the school's performance list. He then posted a height of 3.72m in the pole vault for second in the meet and third in program history. His time of 3:01.40 was also good for second in the 1000m.

Freshman Reece Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.) placed fifth in the heptathlon and now ranks second in school history with 3,453 points. Hunter won the 1000m with a time of 2:56.15, and set a lifetime best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.93.  

Sophomore Samuel Pyle (Goshen, Ind.) and junior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished third and seventh respectively in the 200m. Pyle ran a time of 23.47 followed by Payne in 23.89. 

The Hanover men's team will look to continue its strong start to the indoor season Saturday, Feb. 3 when the Panthers travel to Anderson, Ind. for the Anderson Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the Kardatzke Wllness Center.
