GREENWOOD, Ind. - Following his record setting performance Friday and Saturday at the Tom Hathaway Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., Hanover men's track and field athlete Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week for field events.
The junior set a school record for the heptathlon with a point total of 4,238 to finish second overall and first among NCAA athletes regardless of division. Sheryak currently owns the top heptathlon point total in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes region and ranks 28th nationally.
While competing in the heptathlon over the weekend, he set personal bests in the pole vault and 60m hurdles, while placing among the top three in every event on day two of the meet. His time of 9.21 in the 60m hurdles moved him into fourth all-time in school history, while his 3.72m pole vault height was good for second at the meet and is now third in program history.
Sheryak is the first member of the Hanover men's team to earn the honor this winter.
The Hanover men will next travel to Anderson, Ind. Saturday, Feb. 3 for the Anderson Invitational. Start time is set for 3 p.m. at the Kardatzke Wellness Center.
