GREENWOOD, Ind. – After a stellar performance at the Anderson Invitational this past Saturday, sophomore Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ky.) of the Hanover men's track & field team has been named the HCAC's Male Track Athlete of the Week.
Veach, who competed in two events this past weekend, the one-mile run and the 4x400m relay, is earning his first career weekly conference accolade. Veach's honor is the second straight week the Panthers have tallied an award, as junior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) was named field athlete of the week last Monday.
The sophomore outkicked a pair of NCAA Division I athletes from Miami (Ohio) down the stretch of the one mile run Saturday, placing first overall. His time of 4:27.67 broke a nearly two-year-old school record and is currently the fastest mark in the conference this indoor season.
Veach also participated on the 4x400m relay "B" team, which finished fourth overall with a time of 3:44.53. The "B" squad had the second fastest time among conference institutions at Saturday's meet, only finishing behind Hanover's "A" unit.
In two outings this indoor campaign, Veach has now set two school records. To go along with his one-mile time this week, the sophomore posted the program's fastest 800m time, 1:59.53, at the UIndy Tom Hathaway Classic, becoming the only Panther to record a sub-two minute mark.
Hanover will have its final preparations before the HCAC Indoor Championships this weekend, when the team travels to compete in the DePauw (Ind.) Classic, Saturday, Feb. 10.
