HANOVER, Ind. - The Hanover men's track & field team will look to prolong its early season success with an appearance at the Joe Banks Invitational at Ohio Northern University this weekend.
Events will kick off at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning with the men's pole vault.
LAST WEEK RECAP: Performances last week were headlined by senior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) and sophomore Reece Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.), who each broke Sheryak's previous program record in the heptathlon. For Sheryak, he finished no lower than sixth in any event, while setting personal bests in the 60 meter dash (7.36 seconds), the long jump (6.34m), and the pole vault (3.70m). For his efforts, Sheryak garnered a second overall placement and a new school-record mark of 4,389 points.
For Hunter, he came out of the gates strong, winning three of the four events that were run on Jan. 25: he timed at 7.29 seconds in the 60m dash, leapt 6.38m in the long jump, and soared to a height of 1.87m in the high jump to claim first place in all. The following day, he would add a victory in the 1000m run. Overall, Hunter finished third in the heptathlon while setting career marks in all events.
On the distance side of things, junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) added a pair of top-eight finishes. Among those was in the 800m run, when he was the fifth runner across the finish line at 2:02.26.
RISING IN THE RANKS: The proficiency that the Panthers have shown has not gone unnoticed: The newest rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) slotted HC 10th in the Great Lakes Region. The Blue and Red are the second-highest ranking team from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, as the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers currently hold the sixth spot. Hanover is the third Indiana institution in the top echelon, with Wabash joining the mix.
RELAYS RACE TO TOP OF THE HEAT SHEETS: In the 4x200, senior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior Samuel Pyle (Goshen, Ky.), freshman Bryce Gatewood (Noblesville, Ind.) and Hunter will be competing. Hunter, Payne and Pyle are all on the top 10 list for the event, as they ran a 1:34.03 last season in toe with now-graduate Andrew Strong.
In the 4x400, Gatewood, Payne and Veach will be joined by freshman Cooper Hanson (Greenfield, Ind.). Gatewood, Hanson, and Veach, along with freshman Justin Johnson (Camby, Ind.) made the top 10 in the event at Friday Night Spikes on Jan. 11 with a time of 3:35.82.
UP NEXT: The Panthers will hit the track again at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, when they travel to DePauw University (Ind.) to compete in the Depauw Invitational.
