MURRAY, Ky. – The Hanover men's track & field team opened its 2019 outdoor season Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16, at the Murray State (Ky.) Margaret Simmons Invitational and the Rose-Hulman Early Bird Meet.
The Panthers won three events at the Division I meet hosted by Murray State, all of which came in distance running. Senior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) paced the field in the 5000m run, clocking in at 15:09.04, just five seconds off his school record mark.
Junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) added a win in the 1500m run and sophomore Andrew Clegg (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the 3000m steeplechase. Veach and Clegg logged times of 4:06.82 and 10:30.80 respectively. Senior Matt Young (Carmel, Ind.) added a fourth-place showing in the steeplechase, running the event in 11:26.54.
Additional top five finishes on the track came from junior Samuel Pyle (Goshen, Ky.) and senior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.). The duo placed third and fourth overall and went 1-2 in terms of Division III athletes in the 200m dash, posting marks of 23.20 and 23.26 seconds, respectively. Pyle also scored in the 400m, racing the one-lap run in 52.46 seconds.
Senior Ethan Monnin (Minster, Ohio) was the lone Panther on the men's side to travel to Terre Haute, Ind., as he placed fifth in the pole vault. Monnin, the school record holder, cleared 4.27m.
Back on the Racers' track Friday, a pair of freshmen scored in the hurdle events. Justin Johnson (Camby, Ind.) ran the 400m hurdles in 1:01.50, placing seventh, while Steven Delaney (Charlestown, Ind.) crossed the finish line eighth in the 110m hurdles at 19.35 seconds. Classmate Sam Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) added a seventh-place showing in the 200m dash, finishing in 23.81 seconds.
In a meet at Murray State littered with Division I, II and NAIA institutions, the Panthers placed eighth out of 11 teams with 56.5 points. Fellow Division III institution, Centre (Ky.), won the team championship with 151.5 points.
