HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College men's track & field team will look to build off a successful outdoor season opener last week when they travel to compete in the two-day Transylvania (Ky.) Invitational this weekend.
SETTING THE SCENE: After opening the 2019 outdoor slate last week at NCAA Division I Murray State (Ky.), the Panthers head back to the Bluegrass State for competition against Division II, Division III and NAIA institutions. The Transy Invite will open Friday, March 22 with the javelin throw at 5 p.m. and a 7 p.m. 10,000m run. Saturday, March 23, will see field events begin at 10 a.m., while track events are slated for an 11 a.m. start. HEDRICK NAMED TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Senior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) continues to have a stellar senior season with the Blue and Red, as he received his third Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly award this past Tuesday. Hedrick, who has received one weekly award for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track this year, won the 5000m run at Murray State, posting the 33rd fastest time in Division III at 15:09.04. The senior placed first in the field of 19 athletes, including nine NCAA Division I runners.
VICTORY LAP: Along with Hedrick's victory, junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) and sophomore Andrew Clegg (Indianapolis, Ind.) also picked up wins at Murray State. Veach took the 1500m run with a time of 4:06.82, while Clegg crossed the finish line first in the 3000m steeplechase at 10:30.80. Both runners are scheduled to compete in the 800m, with Clegg also on the heat sheets for the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase.
SPRINTING TO THE FINISH LINE: A trio of short-distance runners will look to continue to build momentum this weekend in senior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior Samuel Pyle (Goshen, Ky.) and sophomore Reece Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.). Payne and Pyle are coming off successful 200- and 400-meter performances and will be joined by Hunter on the 4x400 relay squad this weekend. All three athletes sit on the program's all-time top 10 list in the 400, while Payne and Pyle also rank third and seventh in Panther lore for the 200.
VAULTING TO SUCCESS: Junior Ethan Monnin (Minster, Ohio) and senior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) will look to find success in the pole vault this weekend at Transylvania. Monnin ranks second all-time at Hanover with an outdoor best of 4.35m and is coming off the nation's 22nd best vault last week at 4.27m. Sheryak will be making his outdoor debut and was last seen at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, where he placed 10th overall in the heptathlon. The senior is also among the top 10 all-time at Hanover in the pole vault.
UP NEXT: The Panthers will close out the month of March with their annual home invite. The Hanover Invitational is slated for 11 a.m., Saturday, March 30.
