Records fall for track & field at IU Billy Hayes Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hanover College men's and women's track & field teams set numerous records during the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational Friday, May 3.

Leading the way for HC was senior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.), who placed second overall in the men's 3000m run with a time of 8:35.87. Hedrick's mark beat 11 of the 12 NCAA Division I runners in the field and is now the fastest time in school and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference history.

Sophomore Erin Browning (Greensburg, Ind.) broke her own school record in the women's hammer throw, posting a distance of 51.93m. Browning, who entered the meet ranked 19th nationally in the event, now has one of the 15-best distances in NCAA Division III this spring. Junior Kyler Perez (Garrett, Ind.) logged a distance of 50.75m in the men's hammer throw.

The third record-setting performance came from the men's 4x100m relay team. The group of senior Darrell Payne (Indianapolis, Ind.), juniors Kornell Dash (Evansville, Ind.) and Reece Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.), and freshman Sam Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) reset their school record for the third time this spring, crossing the finish line at 42.56 seconds. Hunter was also sixth overall and second among Division III athletes in the 400m dash with a time of 49.22 seconds.

Rounding out the men's performance was senior Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.). Sheryak set a personal record in the 400m, 51.34 seconds, while also posting a distance of 5.74m in the long jump.

Seniors Erin Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind.) and Emily Clancy (Columbus, Ind.) competed in the women's pole vault Friday. Trimpe led the duo at 3.55m to place seventh, while Clancy cleared 3.40m.

Junior Kenna Hunter (Mooresville, Ind.) added top seven finishes in the high jump and 800m run. Hunter cleared a personal-best 1.58m in the high jump, which keeps her fourth all-time in school history. The junior also ran the 800m in 2:24.22, placing sixth overall.

Hanover will continue its outdoor season with two meets next week. The Panthers are scheduled to send athletes to the North Central (Ill.) Dr. Keeler Invitational Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10, as well as the Mount Olive (N.C.) First Chance and Multi Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11.
