GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference has announced junior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) as its first men's cross country athlete of the week of the 2017 season.
In his opening race of the New Year, Hedrick finished first in the field of 21 runners at the home Hanover Invitational. The junior posted a time of 20:05.2 in the six-kilometer event last Saturday morning.
With a rain-soaked home course and a light mist falling from the sky, the junior raced out from the start to join a lead pack, which included senior teammate Joe Rector (Aurora, Ind.) and 2014 Hanover alum Logan Wells.
The trio stayed neck-and-neck for most of the race, but Hedrick found a second wind late to help him cross the finish line first. With Rector following in second place, the Panthers knocked off IU-East in the dual, home meet.
This is Hedrick's second career HCAC athlete of the week award after he garnered his first such honor last season, for his performance in the Wilmington (Ohio) #JennaStrong Fall Classic.
The junior has now led the Panthers in five of the last six races, dating back to last year, including a third overall placement at the 2016 HCAC Championship.
Hanover will return to action at 3 p.m., Sept. 15, as the team travels to West Lafayette, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships.
