Hanover men look to defend home invite title

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Hanover men's cross country team will kick off its season this Saturday, September 1, with a home invitational held at Hanover College.

Coming off a fourth straight top-3 finish at the conference meet a year ago, the Panthers have their sights set on a championship this fall. But first they will face an early season challenge.

Four others teams will be competing in Saturday's event including Transylvania University, IU-East, IUPUC, and an alumni team comprised of former Hanover College runners. The Panthers won last year's event with a low score of 15 points over IU-East and will look to take home the team title for the third consecutive year.

Senior frontrunner Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) is slated to lead the Red and Blue. Hedrick captured the individual title at this meet a season ago with a time of 20:05.2 for the 6-kilometer course and is coming off an outdoor track season in which he broke a nearly 40-year-old school record in the 5k.

He will be joined up front by junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) and sophomore Andy Vilardo (Bloomington, Ind.) who finished fourth and fifth in last year's event, respectively.

The Panthers will look to round out their scoring from a combination of incoming freshmen talent and returning stalwarts like sophomore Andrew Clegg (Indianapolis, Ind.).

The men's race is set to begin at 10:45a.m.
