WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Hanover men's cross country team used its final pre-conference tune-up to set five personal records at the Wilmington (Ohio) Jenna Strong Fall Classic.
Leading the way for the Panthers Friday evening was senior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.), who crossed the finish line at 25:50.6 in the eight-kilometer event. Hedrick posted an average mile time of 5:11.9 as he placed 23rd overall and fifth among NCAA Division III athletes.
Junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.) followed shortly after, placing 26th with a time of 25:57.1. Veach's mark Friday was a new personal best and moved him into 17th on the program's all-time performance list.
Three additional Harriers finished inside the top-third of a 369-runner field. Leading the trio was sophomore Andrew Clegg (Indianapolis, Ind.) at 27:02.0. Freshman Cooper Hanson (Greenfield, Ind.) and sophomore Andy Vilardo (Bloomington, Ind.) were next to finish, clocking in at 27:10.7 and 27:25.2, respectively. All three runners logged personal records Friday evening.
The final runner to notch a new "PR" was senior Matt Young (Carmel, Ind.). Young finished the 8K race in 28:53.6.
As a team, Hanover placed eighth overall for the second consecutive year. In a field of 36 total teams, from all three NCAA division and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Blue and Red placed third among Division III institutions.
The Panthers will now enter the postseason portion of its schedule, beginning with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 27. Hanover will then compete in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 10. Both postseason runs are slated to be held in Shelbyville, Ind. at Blue River Park.
