Harriers eye top-10 finish at regional meet

Andy Vilardo and Cooper Hanson

HANOVER, Ind. – For the second meet in a row, the Hanover College Men's Cross Country team will travel to Shelbyville, Ind. to compete on the Blue River Memorial Cross Country Course.

Just two weeks ago, the Panthers secured a runner-up finish there in the HCAC Championship, led by individual winner Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.). This week, on Saturday, Nov. 10, they will face 37 other teams from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan in the 2018 NCAA Divsion III Great Lakes Regional Meet. The senior earned all-region honors at the 2017 edition of the meet after placing 27th overall.

Hedrick, who has been a frontrunner for the team all season, will look to lead the charge again as he seeks an individual birth into the national meet. The top seven runners not on an advancing team will receive at-large bids to nationals which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Looking to join Hedrick is junior Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind.). Veach finished eighth overall in the HCAC championships to earn all-league accolades and has been a strong number two for the Red and Blue all season.

With a sturdy one-two punch in place, the Panthers will turn to underclassmen Andy Vilardo (Bloomington, Ind.), Cooper Hanson (Greenfield, Ind.), and Andrew Clegg (Indianapolis, Ind.) to round out the scoring. Vilardo, Hanson, and Clegg finished 22nd, 28th, and 30th at the HCAC meet respectively and will look to keep their tight pack together in a much larger race.

One year ago, Hanover placed 14th overall at the regional meet and are hopeful to improve on that finish this time around. With strong frontrunners in place and a solid pack from runners three through five, the red and blue have their sights set on a top-10 finish overall.

The men's 8,000-meter race is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's championship race.
