Edington logs first career home run Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Hanover softball team was plagued by a pair of sixth inning rallies Tuesday, falling to York (Pa.) and Cabrini (Pa.) during its annual Winter Break Trip.

The Panthers (3-3) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in both games, but a six-run sixth inning by York and a four-run sixth for Cabrini in the nightcap sent the Blue and Red to two losses.

A pair of freshmen in Mackenzie Smith (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Ashley Swearingen (Clarksville, Ind.) finished the day with three hits apiece. Sophomore Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.) added a hit in each game and scored two HC's five runs in the doubleheader opener. Junior Sydney Griffin (Cambridge City, Ind.) suffered her first loss of the season against

York but did strike out 10 batters over 5.2 innings pitched.

Back-to-back hits from Smith and senior McKenzie Writt (Franklin, Ind.) to open the game got the Panthers on the board versus York. Smith led off with a triple and a single from Writt to center field drove her in. Hanover had the bases loaded in the frame with just one retired, but consecutive fly outs ended the scoring threat.

The Spartans recorded two runs in the second before Edington's first career home run tied it at two-all in the top of the fourth. York however, answered with a RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the inning to recapture the lead, 3-2.

Three runs scored on a double from sophomore Jennah Ruddick (McCordsville, Ind.) in the top of the sixth, giving HC a 5-3 edge. Again, York responded, this time capitalizing on three Panther errors and five hits to score six runs.

Hanover then tied a season low in hits during its 4:30 p.m. contest with Cabrini and the one run snapped a two-game streak of five or more. Smith and Writt teamed up again versus the Cavaliers, this time a pair of two-out singles resulted in HC's lone run of the game in the third.

Cabrini scored all six of its runs after the fourth fame, including the four-run sixth. Full statistics for HC's contest against the Cavaliers will be provided by the Cabrini sports information office Wednesday morning.

The Panthers will look to close out their Florida trip with a pair of wins Thursday, March 1, when they square off with Alverno (Wis.) and Cabrini. Hanover is slated for 2 and 4:30 p.m. start times Thursday, similar to Tuesday's schedule.
