GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the second straight season, junior Sydney Griffin (Cambridge City, Ind.) of the Hanover softball team has been named the HCAC's first Pitcher of the Week.
After a no-hitter highlighted the start for Griffin's 2017 season, she began her junior campaign equally as dominant, posting a 4-1 record in five appearances during the team's annual Florida Winter Break Trip. In four starts, she pitched three complete games, while striking out 38 batters over 27.2 innings pitched. After the opening weeks of the season, Griffin leads the HCAC in both total strikeouts and K's per seven innings, 9.61.
With a pair of complete-game two-hitters, Griffin has also conceded just 19 hits and nine earned runs over nearly 30 innings pitched. The junior boasts a 2.28 earned run average after the Winter Break Trip.
In her season debut, Griffin allowed just two hits and no runs, while striking out nine batters in a 7-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead (Wis.). The junior's only loss came to York (Pa.), where she gave up three earned runs but did strike out a season-high 10 batters.
The final day of the trip, March 1, saw her pick up two wins, including a complete game, two-hit performance against Alverno (Wis.). Griffin later pitched an inning in relief as Hanover scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh during an 8-7 win over Cabrini (Pa.). In eight total innings, Griffin struck out 12 batters.
Hanover is off to a 5-3 start this season and will take a two-game winning streak into its home opener against IU-Southeast. The Panthers and Grenadiers will play two, beginning at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 6.
