HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College softball team is set to close out the regular season with eight games this week, including six Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilts.
SETTING THE SCENE: The Panthers (11-15, 4-6 HCAC) open the week Monday, April 22, with a doubleheader against Transylvania, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III Central Region. A road doubleheader will follow at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, at Defiance. The final road series will be at Indiana-Southeast, starting at 2 p.m., Friday, April 26. The regular season and home finale will then come versus Bluffton at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 28.
LAST WEEK RECAP: Heavy rain forced Hanover's lone scheduled doubleheader of the week against Bluffton to be postponed. Prior to last week, the Panthers had gone 3-3 against HCAC foes, including a doubleheader sweep at Anderson, 7-4 in 10 innings and 7-5. Senior Allison Wiseman (New Albany, Ind.) went 2-1 in the circle, which included her third career complete game shutout, as she allowed no runs on three hits in an 8-0 triumph over Rose-Hulman. At the plate, sophomore Brittney Ralston (Hanover, Ind.) batted .385 and posted an on-base percentage of .529.
300 CLUB: A trio of everyday starters for HC are currently batting over .300, led by junior Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.). Edington leads the Blue and Red un batting average (.400), runs scored (18), RBI (15) and home runs (3). After her stellar week at the plate, Ralston has raised her averaged to .318 and has hit safely in six of the last eight games. Sophomore Mackenzie Smith (Jeffersonville, Ind.) is batting .302 and has a team-high seven stolen bases.
PANTHER PITCHING: The Panthers have six shutouts as a team, which ranks second in the HCAC and is among the top 50 teams in NCAA Division III as well. Sophomore Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) has led the way for HC in the circle, picking up seven wins and two saves with a 2.64 earned run average. Beurman leads the conference and ranks 23rd nationally with 115 strikeouts and is 32nd across Division III in strikeout-to-walk ratio, 5.75.
Wiseman now has four wins on the season. During her winning performances, the senior has a 1.54 ERA and has tallied 13 of her 21 season strikeouts.
