Beurman strikes out 11 during doubleheader at Transylvania

Lily Beurman

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) struck out 11 batters Monday afternoon, but the Hanover College softball team dropped two low scoring affairs at Transylvania, 2-0 and 3-1.

Despite taking the loss in Game One, Beurman struck out 11 Pioneer hitters over 10.0 innings of work. The sophomore allowed two runs on six hits in Game One before pitching a scoreless four innings in relief in Game Two, retiring seven via strikeout.

The Pioneers (16-10, 6-2 HCAC) scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning, which turned out to be the only offense for either side in the opener. Sophomore Mackenzie Smith (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and junior Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.) reached via single and double in the fourth as Hanover had the bases loaded. Unfortunately, the Blue and Red were unable to capitalize on the threat. Both Edington and Smith reached safely in five-of-seven plate appearances Monday.

Sophomore Ashley Swearingen (Clarksville, Ind.) tallied a one-out double in the seventh, allowing the tying run to reach the plate. An infield popup and groundout followed though to conclude the game.

The night cap saw Transylvania grab two runs in the first inning again. After HC left the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Pioneers led 2-0. The Blue and Red left six runners stranded over the first three innings and 12 total in the game. Transylvania added another run in the third to go up 3-0.

Smith and Edington reached in the seventh via walks and Swearingen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Sophomore Brittney Ralston (Hanover, Ind.) hit a single through the left side to score Smith and make the score 3-1. However, a strikeout swinging followed to end the threat and the game.

With four Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games remaining, the Panthers currently sit one game back from the fifth and final postseason tournament qualifying spot.

League play will continue for HC with a doubleheader at Defiance, beginning at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 24.
