NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Late inning rallies plagued the Hanover College softball team Friday afternoon during a doubleheader setback at Indiana University-Southeast.
The Panthers (11-21) dropped Game One of the non-conference twin bill in extra innings, 4-3. The NAIA-Grenadiers (26-22) then took the night cap, 5-1.
Sophomore Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) had nearly half of the Panthers' hits Friday, going 4-7 at the plate. Beurman also pitched the entire game in the opener, going 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out five.
The Grenadiers took advantage of a Hanover error in the bottom of the third to capture a 1-0 lead in Game One. The Panthers though, answered right back in the next half inning, as sophomore Ashley Swearingen (Clarksville, Ind.) scored two with a base hit, giving HC a 2-1 advantage.
IU-Southeast tied the game with a run in the fifth and neither side could scratch across a run in the sixth or seventh innings, sending the contest to extras. Freshman Abby Wilson (Cincinanti, Ohio) scored as the international tiebreaker runner in the eighth, as junior Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.) drove her in with a single to left. The Grenadiers however, scored twice on two hits in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory.
IU-Southeast jumped out to another early lead in Game Two, scoring twice in the bottom of the third. Despite multiple hits from Beurman and sophomore Rachel Cox (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the contest, the Panthers were only able to record one run in seven innings.
Wilson plated the lone run for the Blue and Red with a single in the top of the sixth, making HC's deficit 2-1. IU-Southeast answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half to secure the 5-1 win.
Senior Allison Wiseman (New Albany, Ind.) went 6.0 innings in the circle, conceding eight hits and three earned runs. Wiseman struck out four batters as well.
Hanover will look to bounce back when the team welcomes Bluffton for a Senior Day doubleheader on Sunday, April 28. The Panthers and Beavers are scheduled for a 1 p.m. series start.
