Defensive Errors Doom Panthers on Final Day of Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Hanover Panthers wrapped up their annual trip to Florida on Thursday afternoon as they fell to Alma 4-1 and Capital 6-5.

The Blue and Red (4-4 overall) opened the afternoon with the Scouts as junior Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) got the call to the mound. Beurman pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts. The performance marks her fourth straight outing with at least nine or more K's.

Alma struck first in the contest as they plated a run in the top of the first inning before adding another run in the top of the third inning.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw Hanover threaten the Scout lead as freshman Kendra Hutchison (Lafayette, Ind.) singled before freshman Nikki Bridgers (Florence, Ky.) advanced her to second base. However, the Panther were unable to muster a hit as Alma retired the side.

The Scouts tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning before Hanover responded. In the bottom half of the inning, Hutchison reached on a double when a Bridgers walk advanced her to scoring position. Sophomore Katherine Dickinson (provided the timely hit as she sent an RBI double to the out field scoring the Panthers only run.

Game two on the afternoon saw Hanover drop a heartbreaking lead in the sixth inning. The Blue and Red opened the contest with a two run first inning paced by a triple from Hutchison that scored Beurman and freshman Kensie Bradley (Greenfield, Ind.).

The hot hitting continued for Hanover as freshman Paige Knowling (New Market, Ind.) charted an RBI in the top of the second inning scoring Dickinson, extending the lead 3-0. The Panthers final two runs came in the top of the sixth inning as sophomore Kiley Shedron (Cloverdale, Ind.) provided the timely hit with a single to the outfield that scored both Hutchison and Edington.

However, the Capital bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning as they were able to make something happen forcing a series of Panther miscues to cut the deficit to 5-4 before the Blue and Red retired the side. The struggles, however, continued for Hanover as the Crusaders were able to score the game winning run on another Panther hiccup.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 7 as they head north to take on Hope, Mich. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
