LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Hanover College women's basketball team looked to rally but came up short on Friday evening as they fell in non-conference action at Spalding, 76-62.
The Panthers (1-2 overall) were led on the day by senior Alexis Nall (Mount Vernon, Ind.) with her first double-double of the season. The senior netted 20 points while hauling in 13 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits for the Blue and Red were senior Kristin Mills (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Savannah Courtney (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The two teams exchanged buckets early in the opening period as a Nall free throw with 9:07 to play gave HC the 3-2 advantage. Senior Brooke Todd (Vevay, Ind.) also found success at the charity stripe as she sank a game-tying free throw before another Nall layup put Hanover on top 9-7. However, the excitement didn't last long as a Spalding 6-0 run gave the Golden Eagles the 16-11 lead. They would score the periods final basket from inside the paint for the 22-16 advantage.
The shooting streak carried into the second quarter for SU as they connected for a deep ball before a fast break layup with 6:57 to play pushed the lead to double digits, 27-16. It didn't stop there as another jumper capped off a small 4-0 run to extend the score with 4:56 remaining, 31-19. The Blue and Red clawed their way back into the contest led by a Mills layup that led to six unanswered points cutting the deficit to 33-27. Sophomore Lanette Blume (St. Anthony, Ind.) sank a pair of free throws seconds before half to help HC erase the 14 point difference and enter the break with a slight 35-31 deficit.
In the second half, Spalding established themselves early hitting a pair of three-pointers to push the advantage back to 44-34. Hanover looked to respond as a pair of free throws by Mills and a Blume layup caused a Spalding timeout with 6:45 to play. However, the timeout appeared to have a reverse effect as Nall used a 6-0 run of her own to pull the Panthers within two, 46-44. They would take the lead moments later following layups by sophomore Liz Tynan (Columbus, Ind.) and Nall for the 48-46 advantage. But Spalding weathered the storm hitting a huge three-pointer with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter before connecting from the charity stripe for the 57-53 third quarter lead.
In the final period of action, senior Katie Hartman (Madison, Ind.) deemed clutch hitting an HC deep ball to put the Panthers back on top 59-57. The Golden Eagles would claim the game in the final five minutes as a 15-0 run was all Spalding needed for the non-conference victory.
The Blue and Red return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 30 when they take on Centre. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
