HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover women's golf team is ready for another season as the Panthers travel to Marshall, Mich. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2-3 to participate in the Olivet Labor Day Classic at The Medalist Golf Club.
Hanover, which won its fourth straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship last year, also opened the 2016 season in Michigan in the same tournament hosted by Olivet College. The Panthers placed fifth out of eight teams a year ago with a team score of 678 (341-337) on the 5,834-yard par 72 course.
Four of the team's five players from that tournament are back this fall. Sophomores Maddie Cody (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Allison Goodwin (Lebanon, Ind.) both placed in the top 20 in what was their first collegiate tournament. Cody tied for 14th with a two-day score of 166 (81-85) and Goodwin was one stroke behind in 17th with a 167 (87-80).
Washington University won last year's event with a team score of 612. All five players for the Bears finished in the top seven led by current sophomore Samantha Haubenstock, the individual winner, who shot 79-72 for a score of 151.
This year's tournament will have six competing teams. Other than Hanover, there will be three other HCAC schools in attendance, including Defiance, Franklin and Rose-Hulman. The host, Olivet, and Saint Mary's will round out the field.
This will also mark the first time Wash U will not be participating. The Bears have won the tournament the last four years and have had the top individual the last three years.
